WNBA Launches 'Take a Seat, Take a Stand' Initiative to Empower Women and Girls

Each game ticket sold will funnel $5 to one of six important organizations.

The WNBA recently announced the launch of Take a Seat, Take a Stand, an initiative to assist women in a vareity of ways, SlamOnline reports. The cause, which will involve all 12 of the league's teams, will see a portion of ticket sales will go to organizations like Planned Parenthood and the United State of Women, a gender equality summit held in Washington, D.C., as well as four other organizations.

"For the Take a Seat, Take a Stand program, the WNBA selected leading national organizations that are changing the game for women and girls, from promoting women’s health, to creating safe and inclusive schools for LGBTQ students, to working to prevent sexual assault,” the WNBA said on their website. It will also offer up free tickets for young women to attend games. 

"For 22 years, the WNBA and its players—women playing at the highest level of their sport—have stood up as role models for millions of women and girls," said WNBA President Lisa Borders. "With Take a Seat, Take a Stand, we are proud to come together as a league to stand with our partner organizations, our fans and the many inspiring women raising their voices for change in the current women’s movement." 

"As WNBA players we like to take advantage of our platform and opportunities to connect and empower other women, whatever you're passionate about, our league backs you up," said Minnesota Lynx player Maya Moore. "It's exciting to know we come to work not just to do the sport we love, but help other women with what they want to do and be great at."

Dallas Wings player and three-time All-Star Skylar Diggins-Smith recently spoke to Complex about using her platform in positive ways as well. "I’m not afraid to shout sometimes. It’s just so much bigger than us," she said.
