UPDATED 8/29/18, 1:15 p.m. ET: Variety reports that USA and show creator Sam Esmail have confirmed that Mr. Robot will end with its fourth season. Mr. Robot has remained one of USA Network's most successful shows, with Sam Esmail's techno-thriller bringing in 13 Emmy nominations and a glowing critical reception since its first season. It's only ever been a modest hit for the network, though, surviving on critical reception instead of viewership. It has, however, been renewed for season 4, although it's starting to sound like it might be the last.
The Rami Malek/Christian Slater–starring series hasn't set a premiere date for its fourth year just yet, but Slater did reveal it's currently in the writing stages. Speaking with Collider, Slater revealed that the show could very well be ending whenever it does return.
"I believe that will be the last season," Slater said. "Sam always said it was going to be somewhere in that zone, and he didn't want to go further than what he could creatively contribute to that storyline. So, I think that season 4 will be it. I think they're in the writers' room, as we speak, putting it all together, but I have no idea what it's gonna be, or if I'm gonna be floating in and out of scenes. I have no idea, so we'll see what happens."
Speaking with Variety in 2016, the showrunner and creator of Mr. Robot, Sam Esmail said he always had the story-arc of the show pegged with four or five seasons in mind. "Initially this was supposed to be a feature-length film and so I know where we're going and the ending, so probably about four or five seasons," he explained. "I like to know where we're going and where we're heading. I think it's tougher if it's open ended."
It's unlikely we'll see more from Mr. Robot until 2019 with the writing having started relatively recently. Esmail has been busy with his new Amazon psychological thriller Homecoming, starring Julia Roberts, while Rami Malek had been working on Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
