The CW is rebooting Charmed with an all-new cast of younger actresses.
While the reboot is being described as “fierce, funny, feminist” by the CW—original cast member Holly Marie Combs sees nothing of the sort in the network’s development thus far.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Shannen Doherty, who played Prue in the original series, considers the reboot’s description not only “terribly” worded, but “offensive.” While Alyssa Milano has yet to weigh in on this re-imagining of the show, Holly Marie Combs has no problem expressing her open and honest feelings on this endeavor.
As you can see, Combs threw some shade at Yahoo for misquoting her statements, in addition to criticizing the decisions behind CW’s reboot. The actress is adamant that while she’s happy with the newfound attention and career opportunities this reboot has provided, she “will never understand what is fierce, funny or feminist in creating a show that basically says the original actresses are too old to do a job they did 12 years ago." Combs continued, "I hope the new show is far better than the marketing so the true legacy does remain”
To be fair, we have no way of knowing just yet if the new cast—Sarah Jeffery, Melonie Diaz, and Madeleine Mantock—aren’t perfect for these roles, and respectful baton-holders of their predecessors. At the same time, the aggravation felt by Combs is understandable.
The rebooted version of Charmed will begin airing on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET this upcoming fall.
