Michael Boatwright, 22, one of the four men accused by police of being involved in the death of XXXTentacion, will undergo a mental exam to determine whether he is fit enough to stand trial.
Boatwright is one of the two men who police say was armed during the attempted robbery that resulted in the “SAD!” rapper’s death, and he is also the one suspected of firing the weapon that killed X. Boatwright had been arrested on an unrelated drug charge but was eventually arrested in connection to the murder after being served with a warrant for first-degree murder on July 10.
Court documents obtained by Complex show that a judge has ordered the exam to decide whether the case can proceed with him or not. It will be done by the end of August and recorded on video. The test will be administered to find out if Boatwright can communicate “pertinent facts” to his attorney, understand the charges he faces, the potential consequences, the nature of a court case and if he can behave appropriately in court, and if he can testify in a relevant way.
If Boatwright is found incompetent by the appointed doctor, he could be involuntarily hospitalized. That same doctor might recommend appropriate treatment and will also make a recommendation as to if such treatment would make him competent to stand trial in the foreseeable future.
XXXTentacion, who was 20 years old, was murdered during an attempted robbery as he was leaving a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida in June. In July, four men, including Boatwright, were indicted by a grand jury in connection with the robbery. Police say Boatwright and Trayvon Newsome, 20, were both armed, but two other men, Dedrick Devonshay Williams, 22, and Robert Allen, 22, were also involved. At the time of the indictment, both Allen and Newsome remained at large. Since then, only Allen has been found and arrested.
