Juelz Santana caught another break this week.
According to the Associated Press, the rapper’s trial on weapons charges has been postponed by at least one month. The outlet reports Santana was expected to appear in court at the beginning of September; however, the trial will take place no sooner than Sept. 30, as the rapper continues to negotiate a plea deal.
Per AP: The delay will “permit defense counsel the reasonable time necessary for effective preparation in this matter and to allow the parties to enter into plea negotiations.”
Santana—legal name LaRon James—was arrested five months ago in New Jersey after airport security discovered a firearm and un-prescribed oxycodone pills in his carry-on. The 36-year-old rapper fled the scene and didn’t turn himself in until three days later. He has since pleaded not guilty to state charges of a possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as well as carrying a weapon onto an aircraft.
Santana was indicted on two federal firearm charges in May. He could spend up to 20 years in prison if convicted on both counts.
The Dipset lieutenant is currently out on bail and living with his mother. In June, a judge modified his bail conditions so that he could legally travel for his tour. A couple of weeks ago, he was also granted weekend release from house arrest so that he could celebrate his daughter’s birthday.
