The New York Times reports at least 10 people, including two children, are injured after a shooting in Manchester, England. The shots came shortly after 2 a.m. early Saturday during a carnival street party.
"This was a reckless act that could have had devastating consequences with families and friends losing loved ones," said Chief Superintendent Wasim Chaudhry, who also said that the wounds are not life-threatening. However, he says the shooter's motive is still unknown.
In the meantime, Chaudhry says authorities are using forensic work and interviewing witnesses to find the perpetrator. They're also investigating it as "an attempted murder," according to the New York Times, since the shooter seemingly used a shotgun which left one person in serious, now-stable condition and nine others with pellet-type wounds. The victims' ages range from 12 to the 50s and mostly suffered leg injuries. Chaudhry says one of the victims will also need leg surgery.
"It is unclear at this stage what the motive, what the reason behind this attack, was," said Chaudhry in a separate statement to the press. "However, we’ve got to be clear, it would be obvious to any particular person that discharging a firearm in a large crowd like this is completely reckless."
It's been a little over a year since a terrorist bomb went off at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, killing almost two dozen people. Grande commemorated the anniversary of the attack and said she still has PTSD from that night.
