UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has accepted the job of head coach for the wrestling program at Gilroy High School in California.
Cormier jumped on the opportunity because he believes it will help hone his son’s wrestling skills. “The job came available in my town and it's a really good school and program -- but most of all, it helps my son," Cormier told ESPN. "My boy is seven and he has a lot of good partners at AKA, but when you add that team too, it gives him a ton of guys to wrestle with. I believe it will help him on his journey.”
Cormier also sees this coaching gig as another opportunity to give back to the sport that has done so much for him. “It will also help a lot of the kids on their journey in high school, with the visibility and the notoriety I have,” he said. “I can get coaches in the room to take a look at these kids and help them get opportunities to go to college. The sport has done so much for me, I just want to give back."
With his new coaching job and an upcoming title match against Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 on July 7, Cormier has plenty on his plate at the moment. However, at 39 years old, DC may be setting himself up for life after the UFC, considering he has repeatedly said that he would not fight past his 40th birthday. He will be turning 40 next March.
Cormier plans to donate the salary he receives from his new job to his Gilroy assistant coaches, perMMA Fighting.
