A middle school football team from Virginia has been forced to forfeit the remainder of its season as a result of a racist Snapchat video that surfaced last week.
According to WWBT-TV, the football team from Short Pump Middle School in Glen Allen, Virginia has had its season cut short due to a video that features several white players simulating sex acts on several fellow black players and using racial slurs in the team’s locker room. A caption on one of the videos said, "What really goes on in the football locker room." Another read, "We’re going to f*ck the black outta these African children from Uganda."
The local Henrico County School Board pulled the plug on the rest of the team’s games after the video became public. The board also sent out a letter condemning the behavior of the students shown in the clip. "Behavior of this type will not be tolerated in our schools," it said. The players who were not involved in the making of the Snapchat video will continue to practice moving forward, but they will not be permitted to take part in any games.
Local police have also launched an investigation into the video and may press charges against those in it. They are currently trying to determine if the black players in the clip were held down and forced to take the video or if they agreed to take part in it. Either way, it could lead to serious legal trouble for players from the team, and it has forced the school to rethink the way they will monitor athletes moving forward.
