The Lakers announced late Friday that they have agreed to a multi-year deal with Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton to be their new head coach. This comes just four days after Byron Scott was fired from the team.
Walton led the Warriors to a 39-4 record before Coach of the Year Steve Kerr returned to the team, and led them to a 73-9 record, the best in regular season history.
The 36 year-old Walton was the targeted for many head coaching vacancies including the Knicks, Suns, Kings, Timberwolves, and Rockets. The Lakers released a statement about hiring Walton:
As a player, Walton played 10 years in the NBA, and won back-to-back championships with the Lakers in 2009 and 2010.
