One the most hilarious and underrated details of Issa Rae’s Insecureis definitely Due North, the show-within-the-show starring Regina Hall in pre-Civil War South. In the season 2 of Insecure, we watched the show as the characters do, following Hall’s meta character Ninny and the romantic relationship she has with her white slave master.
With season 3 around the corner, Issa and her best friend Molly played by Yvonne Orji, as well as the other characters on the show, will be tuning into a new hit series. Prentice Penny, who serves as executive producer and showrunner of the HBO series, revealed to Variety that there would be a new show-within-the-show to follow Due North.
“It’s definitely timely in the wake of a lot of things that happened in Hollywood in the last month or so,” Penny teased. It’s unclear exactly what he means, but he could be referring to the #MeToo movement on top of a number of other things.

As revealed in a Q & A with the Hollywood Reporter, Insecure season 3 will take a deep-dive into "black masculinity as it relates to black women" and more. "I think that's something interesting that we haven't gotten a chance to explore yet — and specifically toxic male black masculinity as it relates to black women," Rae said. "I'm trying to find a way to explore that and get a rounded storyline that isn't preachy." As the characters enter their third decades of existence, she added, we'll also see them "adulting in a new way."
Season 3 of Insecure airs on HBO on August 12.
