Patrick Stewart could be returning to the captain’s chair as Jean-Luc Picard. According to rumors shared via The Hollywood Reporter, CBS All-Access has proposed a Star Trek reboot series starring Stewart, one of the franchise’s biggest names.
This news comes on the heels of the report that Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman extended his contract with CBS for five years to the tune of $25 million. According to THR, the deal is still far from finalized. Some sources told THR that Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman, a writer on Star Trek: Discovery season one, are working on the Stewart-led reboot. Stewart led the franchise for all seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994.
CBS Television Studios didn’t confirm any specific project, but there are reportedly three different concepts in development, including Stewart’s. “CBS has also allowed us the great pleasure of reintroducing the world of Star Trek audiences new and old, and we are very excited to keep working alongside them to expand that world,” Kurtzman said in a statement.
“There is a very short list of writer-producer-directors that every film and television studio wants to be associated with, and Alex and his Secret Hideout team are always at the top,” David Stapf, CBS Television Studios president, said. “His talent, taste and ability to shepherd a successful project is unparalleled. Alex has done remarkable work for our studio, dating back seven years to the launch of Hawaii Five-0, and we are thrilled that he, Heather [Kadin] and their team will be partnering with us for a long time to come.”
