'Deadpool 2' Villain Was Modeled After White Nationalists in Charlottesville

'Deadpool 2' director David Leitch drew inspiration from Charlottesville to create the headmaster villain.

Deadpool 2 spoilers ahead.

The Deadpool 2 trailer painted Cable as the main villain as he goes after a mutant kid, Russell Collins, aka Firefist. But it turns out there are a few more villains and antagonists. Cable travels back in time to kill Collins before he kills the school's torture-happy headmaster. The kill leads Collins to getting his first taste of blood...and leaves him thirsty for more.

As the film becomes a race against time (and Cable) to start Collins on an alternate path which doesn't include murder, the extent to which the headmaster abused Collins gets revealed. At the end, the headmaster is easily the most evil villain in the film.

"We knew it was going to be a bad guy in this position doing these nefarious things," director David Leitch told The Hollywood Reporter. "But I got on the phone with [actor] Eddie [Marsan]. 'It's not a lot of dialogue, how can we make this feel creepy? How do we make this guy feel nefarious? How do we define him physically through your voice?'"

The answer came through tragic news of a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville which turned deadly when a white nationalist drove into a crowd of people protesting the rally and killed Heather Heyer.

"That kind of informed what we were doing with the character, i.e. somebody who didn't want to be replaced by people different than them, who was scared of change, scared of the other," explained Marsan. "This character came out of the zeitgeist, really, because the production designers, the writers, everybody was coming up with this character. He was the archetypal, fascist, perverted bigot."

Sounds about right.
