Steven Spielberg is venturing into the DC Universe. According to Deadline, the Oscar-winning director has signed on to produce Warner Bro.’s upcoming Blackhawk film under his Amblin Entertainment production company.
But that’s not all. Spielberg is also reportedly in talks to direct the superhero flick.
The news was announced Tuesday, nearly three weeks after Spielberg and WB’s Sci-fi film Ready Player One hit U.S. theaters.
“We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure,” WB Chairman Toby Emmerich said, according to Deadline. “We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing Blackhawk to movie audiences worldwide.”
The Blackhawk comic book series debuted in 1941 under Quality Comics and was later acquired by DC. It told the story of an elite group of WWII pilots led by a military hero named Blackhawk. The Squadron would take on villains like King Condor and Killer Shark, as well as the Axis powers.
The DC film will be written by David Koepp, who has worked with Spielberg on projects like War of the Worlds, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and two Jurassic Park installments.
Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce the movie alongside Spielberg, with Sue Kroll on board as executive producer.
“It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen,” Spielberg said. “They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk.”
It’s unclear when production for the DC film will begin. Spielberg’s next two films are the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise and West Side Story.
