Does anyone need a reminder of just how horrible the world is?

Well, you’re getting one anyway: Anne Hathaway, known for having a voice so angelic it makes people cry, actually had to put herself one step in front of internet trolls and fat-shamers by preemptively warning her Instagram followers that she is gaining weight for a movie role. “I am gaining weight for a movie and it is going well," the Oscar-winning actress wrote in the caption to a video she posted to her Instagram today. "To all the people who are going to fat shame me in the upcoming months, it’s not me, it’s you." On the one hand, she definitely handled the situation like a badass, but on the other, it's heartbreaking that this is what we've let it come to. “I wanted to set this to Queen’s ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ but copyright said no,” she added as a postscript.

Hathaway didn’t specify what role she is gaining weight for, though the video showed the actress working out, which might provide some clues as to how her body will change. According to her IMDb page, Hathaway has a few upcoming projects that haven’t been filmed yet and aren’t in post-production.

One is titled The Lifeboat, and is described as the story of “a young woman on trial for murder, recounts the tale of how she survived a shipwreck at sea in a lifeboat that initially carried too many people.” Another is titled Live Fast Die Hot, and is about an “eccentric New Yorker” whose life “changes dramatically” when she becomes a mother. Hathaway is also involved in a project titled O2, about a woman who wakes up in a cryogenic chamber with no memory of how she got there and must fight to get out alive. Alternatively, she could be gaining weight for something else altogether.

Hathaway will star in the highly-anticipated female-frontedOcean's 8, which premieres June 8. She will star alongside an impressive group of women: RihannaSarah Paulson, Cate Blanchett, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, and Helena Bonham Carter. In other words, it might be the greatest movie of all time. Whatever film Hathaway is gaining weight for, hopefully she will be allowed to "fat in peace," to use the words of the great philosopher Cardi B.
