New 'Star Wars' Series Coming From 'Game of Thrones' Showrunners

Can you decapitate a Stormtrooper?

If you thought season 8 of Game of Thrones was all you had to look forward to from series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, fear not! Also, get ready to lose your shit. The fellas behind the globally popular, Emmy-winning series have set their sights on another wildly renowned franchise. Did you guess it yet? (I know it was in the headline, but this is fun.) Star Wars! Cue theme music.

And it’s not just one film, Benioff and Weiss are set to write and produce a series of Star Wars movies. OMFG(oT). However, Stars Wars fans need not wig tf out over authenticity and continuity, since the new films will exist separately from the Skywalker saga and the new Rian Johnson trilogy currently in development. President of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy lauded the duo as “some of the best storytellers working today.” She went on to say, “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement that they “are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

HBO's controversial Benioff and Weiss project Confederate was previously touted as their immediate follow-up to Thrones, so it very well could be back-burnered or, given the deluge of hate against its premise, scrapped.
