Do you ever find yourself listening to one of your favorite songs and thinking: “Man, this would make a great movie”? Well, the creators of BET’s new series TALES are thinking that way, taking that artistic notion and turning it into a reality.
From executive producer Irv “Gotti” Lorenzo, TALES is an hour-long, scripted anthology series that takes some of the greatest hip-hop and R&B tracks, and transforms them into riveting mini movies. The “song stories” derive inspiration from a classic song’s lyrics, and then dramatize them in a compelling narrative and visually stunning experience. Iconic tracks like NWA’s “F*ck the Police” and Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” are reimagined as dramatic representations (quite different from music videos), with complex characters and deeply visceral themes. You know, the ones that resonate with us when we listen to the songs themselves.
Each “tale” features the talents of a different writer and director, offering a completely unique artistic perspective of the beloved hip-hop song in question. TALES is the first and only scripted series that combines hip-hop and cinema in such a way.
