Revenge porn is an increasingly troubling problem that, because of its reliance on relatively new technologies, is confusing court systems across the country. But in a major victory, a Texas woman has been awarded a $500,000 verdict over an ex-boyfriend in a civil suit. After their split, the woman's former boyfriend took to posting personal images and videos of her on various social networks as a way through which to antagonize her.
"If I ever sent him a picture, I asked him to delete it right away. And he promised me that he did," she explained to ABC. But after the breakup, he "started threatening me, blackmailing me with the pictures and video, which I didn't know he recorded. He would update me on how many people had seen it, or downloaded it."
So far, California and New Jersey have made revenge porn illegal, albeit by what some criticize as narrow definitions. Other states are expected to follow suit.
