Freddie Gibbs wants to use his platform to help victims of sexual assault, as well as those who’ve been falsely accused of the crime.

About two years ago, Gibbs was arrested on sexual assault charges stemming from a 2015 incident in Vienna, Austria. The Indiana rapper was accused of spiking a woman’s drink and raping her “while she was in a defenseless state.” After Gibbs vehemently denied the allegations for months, a Vienna regional court determined there was not enough evidence to prove the rapper committed a crime.

This week, the 36-year-old rapper spoke about the allegations during an appearance on Ebro Darden’s Beats 1 radio show. He explained that despite his acquittal, he still had to show the world he wasn’t the sexual predator he was accused of being.

“When I came out of that situation, you know, I had to build my name back up,” Gibbs said. “[…] I feel like I just had to explain myself. ‘Cause it’s a lot of cats that get into those situations and they don’t speak on it; they don’t meet it head on because they’re actually guilty and they feel like they got something to hide.”

Gibbs also said it was important for the innocent to speak up in wake of Hollywood’s stance against sexual misconduct.

“We’re in a time, with all this #MeToo stuff, there’s a lot of guys getting tapped, man,” he said. “I feel like right now I got to be an advocate for those people that’s falsely accused, as well as the victims that are afraid to speak. I got a child, I got a daughter, man, and god forbid anybody do anything to her.”

The rapper also spoke about the cover of his eponymous mixtape, which dropped last month. You can check out that clip below.
