It's starting to feel like Kendrick Lamar has single-handedly made award shows back into must-see TV. His 2018 Grammys performance was audacious and politically charged, and his appearance at the BRIT Awards was (literally) incendiary.

Lamar took the stage and performed an excerpt of "FEEL." off 2017's DAMN. before transitioning into "New Freezer," his collaboration with Rich the Kid, who was on stage destroying a Lamborghini. Behind the two MCs the screen read "This is another satire by Kendrick Lamar," a reference to the similar message that appeared at the Grammys. Lamar wound up taking home the BRIT's International Male Solo Artist award, beating out Drake and Childish Gambino, among others.

While no one would have blamed Kendrick for putting it on cruise control in 2018 after burning up last year with DAMN., the rapper has instead put his foot on the gas. His Black Panther soundtrack is one of the year's early highlights, and the videos from it have been positively cinematic. Speaking to Billboard about his fully-realized, immersive music videos, the rapper stressed the importance of having a visual that compliments the message of the music.

"So by the time we got to the point where we can mass produce visuals on that level, we said to each other 'We all in,' and that we've been waiting for this moment," Lamar said. "So, I think it's something that always inspired us to do it, just being a student and always appreciating somebody being willing to put full impact and full ideas not only into the songs, but when you're watching the songs."
