One day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to stop separating migrant children from their families at the U.S. border, First Lady Melania Trump decided to make a spontaneous trip to Texas to meet with the detained children. The trip was overshadowed by a detail so cruel that you’d criticize it for being too on-the-nose if this were a movie: she wore a $39 Zara jacket with the words “I don’t really care, do u?” on the back.
At best, this gaffe demonstrates just how incompetent the staff in this administration really is: did no one see the jacket before she boarded the plane? Did no one have literally any other item of clothing to give her? At worst, though the jacket is a macabre reminder of just how little the very people who created this policy care about its dire implications.
Almost immediately after the photos of Melania wearing the jacket appeared online, people began reacting with a mixture of shock and disgust. But, remember, this is the internet, and the jacket is essentially a solid background with white letters. You know what that means, don’t you? It’s highly photoshop-able, which is one of the very few conditions for memes.
