Another sad story has emerged from the southern border of the United States.
As the Trump administration's controversial "zero tolerance" immigration policy continues, nearly 2,300 children have been separated from their parents in the last two months. And just when you thought the level of heartlessness surrounding this issue had reached its peak, former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski opened his mouth during a Tuesday segment on Fox News.
When Democratic strategist Zac Petkanas brought up a story about a 10-year-old girl with Down syndrome who had been taken away from her mother at the border, Lewandowski interrupted with an unfathomable response: "Womp, womp."
Enraged by Lewandowski's callous remark, Petkanas replied, "Did you just say 'womp womp' to a ten-year-old with Down syndrome being taken away from her mother? How dare you. How absolutely dare you, sir."
The story Petkanas was referring to involved a young girl with Down syndrome who was held in a detention facility away from her family in McAllen, Texas, despite her father being a legal US resident. During a press conference on Tuesday, Mexico's Foreign Affairs Minister Luis Videgaray remarked, "From conviction and by constitutional obligation, we cannot remain indifferent before an inhumane and cruel situation."
In a similarly unbelievable moment on Fox News Monday, host Laura Ingraham described the horrific conditions in the child detention centers as "essentially summer camps."
These tone-deaf comments come in the face of unsettling audio that was recently obtained from inside a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility where an agent can be heard joking, “We have an orchestra here,” as children cry in the background.
