Ivanka Trump posted a photo of herself smiling and holding her two-year-old son Theodore on Sunday. While this is obviously a completely normal thing to do, and would usually be met with nothing but positive responses and feelings of joy, the complete lack of awareness regarding timing and content is baffling—as her father’s administration is currently responsible for separating and losing 1,500 undocumented children.
Ivanka’s tweet was published on the same day that former Republican Senator Rick Santorum told CNN that while the government doesn’t know where the 1,500 children actually are, they’re not technically lost. This kind of nonsense and talking around the subject is par for the course for people like Santorum, but when it comes to forcibly separating over a thousand children from their parents, and physically losing them—this kind of rhetoric should simply not be tolerated.
The fact that Ivanka posted the following photo on social media, that very day, goes to show you how irrevocably detached from real-world issues she is—completely unaware that this would cause a public outcry.
While it’s charming to see a mother describe her son as her heart, hold him tightly and smile into his eyes, it’s baffling to think this woman didn’t even consider the recent scandal concerning missing children. Her father is the President of the United States, after all. It simply doesn’t compute. Ivanka, of course, is baffled herself, at the negative responses she’s been receiving in wake of her tweet.
Sadly, she seems to think that those who take issue with her post are mere “trolls” who can’t handle seeing a happy mother in their Twitter feeds. Obviously, this isn’t the case—and no amount of pretentious Marcus Aurelius quotes serve as fertile enough ground to counter this outcry. Thankfully, she has a humanitarian side, as well, and graciously offered everyone suffering from displacement, heartbreak, and the physical loss of their child, a “great week.”
