No 15-year-old should ever have to risk their life trying to save their fellow classmates, but that’s what Anthony Borges did last Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Borges survived the shooting in Parkland, Florida after being shot five times while trying to close and lock the door of a classroom. As pointed out by theDaily Dot, Borges efforts helped save the lives of about 20 other students who were in that classroom.
The horrific aftermath of last week's tragedy isn’t over, as Borges' family struggles to pay the medical expenses for his related injuries. Sarah Caputo launched a GoFundMe asking for a mere $5000 to help his family pay the bills. The internet quickly rallied behind Borges, and in one day surpass that goals. In just three days, people donated over 37 times that amount. As of this post, the GoFundMe page has raised more than $187,000 for the young hero.
People not only donated, but shared their support online for the teen who survived the worst high school shooting in U.S. history.
According to the GoFundMe page, Borges sustained gun shot wounds in both his legs, one shattering his thigh bone, and one wound in his back.
Meanwhile, other students who survived the shooting without injuries are continuing to speak out against the NRA and protest for stricter gun control. They are planning a "March for Our Lives" in Washington on March 24.
