Donald Trump Announces the Fake News Awards Winners, and the Rollout Was a Hot-A** Mess

The president intially tweeted a broken link, which isn't surprising.

We thought we'd never see the day, but it's finally here folks! Donald Trump revealed his "Fake News Awards" on Wednesday night, and unsurprisingly enough, it got off to a hilariously bad start.

Trump tweeted a link to the awards' winners on the Republican National Committee’s website, which of course turned out to be a broken link. Honestly, were you expecting anything less? "The site is temporarily offline, we are working to bring it back up. Please try back later,” the error message read.

And the FAKE NEWS winners are...https://t.co/59G6x2f7fD
JUST IN: Trump's #FakeNewsAwards website crashes immediately after the President tweets about it, which is definitely not a metaphor https://t.co/LaZIJwL4l8 pic.twitter.com/FBtVZuEhxM

As always, Twitter came through with some fun reactions. Cue the trolling:

BREAKING: #FakeNewsAwards postponed due to Stormy weather.

Donald Trump’s day so far:

- #FakeNewsAwards are fake
- John Kelly admits wall is stupid
- Eric Trump reminds us he’s stupid
- Trump lied about height & weight
- Trump Russia money trail
- Bannon cooperating with Mueller
- Trump wishes he’d failed physical
- It’s still only 8pm
President Trump just directed the entire world to the Republican Party @GOP website, using the fake news awards as a tool.

Genius!#FakeNewsAwards
it's amazing that the president unintentionally sometimes provides rousing defenses of the press by creating a fake news awards website that doesn't work

This 404 error has really cheapened the spirit of the Fake News Awards.

But the website eventually began working again and unveiled the winners of the Fake News Awards. "2017 was a year of unrelenting bias, unfair news coverage, and even downright fake news," the post began. "Studies have shown that over 90% of the media’s coverage of President Trump is negative."

Some of the 11 winners include: the Russian collusion; TIME "falsely" reporting that Trump removed a bust of Martin Luther King, Jr. from the Oval Office; ABC News' Brian Ross "chokes" and sends markets in a downward spiral with false report; Newsweek "falsely" reporting that Polish First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda did not shake Trump’s hand; and the New York Times’ Paul Krugman claiming the economy would never recover on the day of Trump’s "historic, landslide victory." Congratulations...?

The Fake News Awards were initially meant to be presented on Jan. 8, but were later pushed back to Jan. 17. "The Fake News Awards, those going to the most corrupt & biased of the Mainstream Media, will be presented to the losers on Wednesday, January 17th, rather than this coming Monday," Trump tweeted earlier this month. "The interest in, and importance of, these awards is far greater than anyone could have anticipated!"

I will be announcing THE MOST DISHONEST & CORRUPT MEDIA AWARDS OF THE YEAR on Monday at 5:00 o’clock. Subjects will cover Dishonesty & Bad Reporting in various categories from the Fake News Media. Stay tuned!

The best part about all of this is Chrissy Teigen making fun of the awards as she hosted a mock ceremony on Snapchat.  “Just arrived here at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood,” the model joked while walking through the lobby. “The Fake News Media Awards are setting up now.”

Teigen first joked that she would be attending the event on Jan. 3. “Excited to host the red carpet LIVE at ‘The Most Dishonest and Corrupt Media Awards,’” she tweeted. “Be sure to tune in!!” Let's hope next year's awards are just as entertaining.
