'Sh*thole' Projected Onto Washington, D.C. Trump International Hotel

The phrase "The President of the United States is a Known Racist and Nazi Sympathizer" was also projected onto the hotel.

The phrase “This place is a shithole” was projected onto an outside wall of the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. on Saturday in what was likely a reference to President Donald Trump’s latest racist remarks. According to a Washington Post report by Martin Weil and Clarence Williams, various phrases referencing Trump’s comments were projected onto the hotel for approximately 40 minutes.

Videos and still photos of the projections initially appeared on visual artist Robin Bell’s Twitter feed Saturday. Bell had previously projected the phrases “Emoluments Welcome” and “Pay Trump Bribes Here” onto the property. Saturday’s projections featured the infamous poop emoji, as well as the phrases “The President of the United States is a Known Racist and Nazi Sympathizer,” “The President Distracts us From Politics That are Harming us,” and “This is not Normal.”

Trump has somewhat distanced himself from his initial comments after calling El Salvador, Haiti, and several African countries “shithole countries” during an Oval Office meeting last week. In the wake of these remarks, various media outlets, celebrities, and fellow Republican officials derided him.

I, as President, want people coming into our Country who are going to help us become strong and great again, people coming in through a system based on MERIT. No more Lotteries! #AMERICA FIRST

On Sunday, Trump tweeted, “I, as President, want people coming into our Country who are going to help us become strong and great again, people coming in through a system based on MERIT. No more Lotteries! #AMERICA FIRST.”

There was no further explanation as to how “merit” would be defined or any clarification on which specific countries provide immigrants who would or would not “help us become strong again.”

Various users responded to Trump’s tweet, pointing out logical inconsistencies in his argument.

If Bell was responsible for Saturday’s projection, he likely won’t face any legal consequences.

“When we first started doing it, we were concerned and we reached out for legal advice,” Bell told Carolina A. Miranda during a 2017 Los Angeles Times profile. “But from the research we did, it was legal. The one thing we can’t do is block traffic. We can’t create an impediment on the sidewalk.”
