Now, I’m not in any way condoning guns or gun violence, but there’s no arguing that this senior citizen is a badass. According to police, 85-year-old Don Lutz of Ellwood City, Penn. fatally shot a home intruder and successfully fought off another early Friday. Lutz was woken up around 1:15 a.m. to the sound of people coming into his house.
The Korean war veteran confronted the intruders armed with a handgun that he apparently keeps under his pillow. That might not sound like the safest way to store a weapon, but having spent some 16 months on the front lines, Lutz says he’s more than comfortable handling a weapon. “What’s the point of having a gun if it’s not loaded?” he said.
Lutz told WPXI that one of the intruders grabbed him, so he shot the man point blank in the chest. “I just fired one. It was in the dark. He attacked me and he was up close and I shot him,” he recounted. Lutz was not harmed in the incident, but as he told the local TV station, he’s “a little sore from scuffling with them.” Lutz explains the two men “jumped” him before they all “went on the floor.” The living assailant ran out the front door after the one Lutz shot rolled off him and died.
Ellwood City police say they have yet to identify either suspect, and Lt. David Kingston confirms that Lutz will not be charged with a crime. “He was defending himself,” said the lieutenant.
